139 Ways to Avoid Cancer – The Asbestos Risk

Cancer Monthly recently published “139 Ways to Avoid Cancer” that lists 139 products that historically contain the known human carcinogen – asbestos. Asbestos was used in many products and thousands of Americans have been diagnosed with asbestos caused diseases like mesothelioma and asbestosis for which there is no cure.
The article also highlights the fact that while most people think there is a ban on asbestos today, there is not one. This known human carcinogen is still allowed in products sold in the U.S. Even more surprisingly, newer products that may contain asbestos are not tracked. The federal government does not maintain a list of asbestos containing products and takes a buyer beware approach. The Environmental Protection Agency warns, “EPA does NOT track the manufacture, processing, or distribution in commerce of asbestos-containing products. It would be prudent for a consumer or other buyer to inquire as to the presence of asbestos in particular products.”
In the last several decades thousands of Americans have been diagnosed with various asbestos related diseases including the cancer mesothelioma and asbestosis. For most of these diseases there is no cure.
“139 Ways to Avoid Cancer” lists 139 products that historically have contained asbestos and may still contain this carcinogen today. By being aware of these products and the fact that they may contain asbestos, people can take the appropriate steps to avoid exposure.
