Movie Review: Salt

The CIA has emerged as the favourite subject for film-makers in Hollywood and Salt per se, is no exception to the rule. The only difference being that Angelina Jolie plays the tough guy in this film – truly making her the only convincingly believable female action hero. She climbs high-rise buildings, jumps over trawlers from the flyover, swims in the deep blue ocean, even gets shot but still never gets caught by the enemy camp!

Capture 294x300 Movie Review: Salt
But who is the enemy camp for Agent Evelyn Salt? Is it the CIA she has been working for, or the Russian cult group which brought her up as a child and placed her in the CIA with a final aim to start a nuclear war? Well, this is a question that even Evelyn Salt wants an answer to… Who is Salt?

Salt is shown using multiple disguises to make her way around without being recognized; none of which seem admirable. The unconvincing disguises are also a big let—down. There is one in which she masks a guy’s face making her look really ugly (funny- ugly). Rest Jolie carries her de—glam look plausibly well. In fact, it’s really painful to see her all bleeding and bruised in the opening shot — good make up job indeed!

Director Phillip Noyce and screenplay writer Kurt j Wimmer have tried very hard to make Salt stand apart by showing her soft, subtle emotions and her love for her commoner husband. But frankly, they have failed at the task as her every action and emotion in that regard, end very abruptly. They seem like props rather that an applicable sub-plot. Coming to the action sequences, Jolie does all what Tom Cruise and Daniel Craig (James Bond) have done before — but again; there is no new flavour to the dish.

The closest clone to the film is the recently released Tom Cruise film Knight and Day, but at least Knight and day was fun to watch, it had comic elements and two great actors – Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The two films overlap each other at many places and if you have seen one, believe me, you wouldn’t want to see the other, until of course, you are a Jolie fan.  Angelina Jolie has really put her foot forward and secured her place as the action star and there is no denying it. In fact, the only high point about the film is that “Hey! Jolie does a Bond-act!”

But what was serious needed in the film was a little more thrill, a little more passion, a little more drama. In short a totally different film would have been better. I’m not ashamed to say I was feeling sleepy while watching this movie… it was boring. Angelina Jolie had abandoned the movie Wanted 2 to do this movie; it was a bad choice and a bad decision. Wanted 2 would have been better than SALT. Maybe she wanted to play a spy and not a mercenary. Whatever, the movie sucked and it is not worth your time or money. Miss this one.
